When I was a boy, I noticed my Father worked hard, long hours at his day job, and then he would come home and stay up til midnight working on his side business. He was a machine, he would work for hours and think nothing of it. Due to his working so much, we never got to have much Dad time, but when we did, it was great fun. For years I took my Father’s advice, and for years I struggled, until I realized he was stuck in the Industrial Age Program, he lived to work.
I never believed that we were to work so hard we would forget to live our lives, that we would trade that life money, like we just sold our souls to the devil. I’m not suggesting there’s anything wrong with a good hard days work, but why are you doing it. Many would stand up and say, “I’m doing this to support my family, so they can have a good life”. While that may be true, I have a hunch, most of us didn’t really believe it when we said it.
If helping people is important, how can you help anyone if you’re working 60 -70 hours a week, your time is eaten by your day job. Maybe your day job helps people, it’s possible that you have traded your life for that day job that helps people. It’s not all bad though, we do however have to step back and ask ourselves why we have traded our time for dollars.
In the end, my Father worked his entire life believing everything would be OK when retirement knocked on his door. It was a lie, and was angry, because he truly thought he was doing was for his family, trading his life so we could have a better life when his working years were finished. He used to tell me, “son, you have a choice, you have to decide which 12 your were going to work. You can work the first 12 hours of a day, or the second twelve, it’s your choice”. I hated it when he said it, because he had already proved his theory, his belief didn’t work.
My Father retired at age 55, he lived to be 70, so he struggled far more in those retirement years than he did when he worked the day job. Because what he was told wasn’t true, he believed what he was told by his employer and by the government. Do this, and do that, and you’ll be just fine come retirement time. So now what do we do with that knowledge?
If you haven’t noticed, most so-called careers have a shelf life, they don’t care how long you’ve devoted your life to it, it doesn’t care how old you are, it flat-out doesn’t care, it will spit you out regardless of the life you traded to make sure it survived. The bottom-line, protectionism, and control is what big business is mostly about, the music industry, newspapers, politicians, they are all doing everything they can to keeps under their thumb. They want you to make that decision of which twelve you’re going to trade you life for a pay cheque.
Some how life has gotten so complicated we’re not sure who to believe, how to undo, and how to unlearn much of what we believe to be true. As I said before, YOU are the secret weapon, only YOU can make a difference, only YOU can decide what, and for how long. Surround yourself with smarter people than yourself, because if you think you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.
Have you ever wondered what happens to things that find their way into the lost & found? What happens to great ideas when they fail to produce desired results? What do you do when what you’ve learned no longer works? Why don’t people start a business? Why do people wish, or hope something better will come along? Why don’t people know what they want? The real question is, what are you looking for, what are you hoping for, and most importantly, what are you waiting for?
There has never been a better time in history for anyone to make the world a better place, to start a business, to make something great happen, to truly see your purpose in life, and yet, we keep holding back. What is it, did you lose something, was it taken from you (most likely yes), or were you told you couldn’t? I’m going to tell you something. Those individuals in your life that tell you it’ll fail, it won’t work, and you can’t do it. They don’t have power over your desire to do something, today….you can just do it, you don’t need permission, you don’t need to ask anyone, you can just do it!
Somewhere along the way we lost sight of our future’s, our desire to do things. I can remember being in high school talking about all the great things I was gonna do after I got out, all the places I was going to go, and how I was going to life out the rest of my life. But somewhere on that journey, that confidence, that desire, that passion, and that drive, was driven out of me. Why? Because I allowed it, not because I didn’t have a choice. But today, that is all in the past, its history, today I can choose, I don’t have to conform to the powers that be, they actually have to keep an eye on me. The tables have turned, and now, you & I have the power to shape our future, to leverage each day, the choice is…more than ever, yours. I’ve always wanted to be a writer, I’m not very good, I did however, choose to start this blog a number of years ago, and I’m writing to you right now!
You might be all fired up and ready to go, but let’s not lose sight of what you already have, and what you must look after, more importantly, making sure you’re being a good citizen that pays their bills, and shows up for work, life doesn’t stop because you’re all excited, and want to focus on your dream. I share this with you because I found myself looking back, wondering what happened, wondering…..something fell off the wagon. What was it, today it’s clear, at the time I was left wondering what was wrong, what was missing.
Many people don’t know what they want to do, many don’t want to leave the comfort of their careers, their jobs, because they are overcome by fear. Fear is powerful, you can’t ignore it, but most of the time, you can over-come it, you might even master it. Fear prevents you from living the abundant life, you never really live until you can move beyond those fears that are strongholds in your life.
What was that something that fell off the wagon? It was my power to choose, I gave up my power to the Industrial Age way of life. I gave my power away so I could feel secure, so I could keep the peace with my family and friends, so I could fit in. That system, that way of life works for some, but it squashes the will of many. If it works for you, then do it well, if it doesn’t….you have a hope and a decision to make, but make smart calculated decisions. Today you have choices most of us didn’t have 20 years ago, today you can do things at much lower levels of risk than 30 years ago. It’s an exciting time to be alive, don’t let your power to choose become something you lost, don’t let it fall off the wagon.
I was once asked what do I get if I use the Open & Free Business Model, it’s simple really, it sets you free. We are so afraid to change the way we think about business, how it really is, we forgot what it was like when we first started, the energy, nervous fear that it might not work, but we kept on going anyway. There is only one thing you really need to master, your fear. If you could identify it, you would probably be able to nail it down to one or two things.
I can only really speak from my experiences, my fears, they still live in me, but they don’t keep me from doing what I so desperately want to do. It doesn’t stop me from doing the thing, it may continue to haunt me from going bigger, growing my art to something far bigger than myself. The truth is, I actually care more about you than I do myself, I write, I share, I speak in public, I do workshops, all for you. But sometimes, all those exercises don’t work, sometimes you want my work the old fashion way. I can assure you, you probably won’t find it in the traditional format, it’s not who I am, and it doesn’t support my message.
Choosing to execute the Open & Free Business Model takes guts, courage, and persistence, it’s not easy to stay the course. It has the same slow growth as the stock market, it takes time to master the model, it takes time to figure out what part of your business can leverage the model. But once you’ve figured out it’s power, you’ll never go back, you’ll never stop giving your customers what they really want from you and your business.
What they want is freedom, freedom to choose, freedom to tell you how they would like to be served, how they would like to use your product or service. If you’re listening, and your practicing the Open & Free Business Model, your world will change, and your business will look different to you, and to your community. But first you must admit your business needs to change, it needs something different, it needs to attract attention in a non-traditional way. Otherwise, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always got. That may be OK for you, but it also may be the very thing that causes your business to struggle, and maybe even go out of business.
Set you and your business free, learn the Open & Free Business Model, follow the three-step process, Create. Differentiate. Deliver.
Isn’t it interesting how much we hear marketing and advertising have changed, yet businesses continue to use old traditional methods to market their business. Why? because it still works! Direct Mail, Newspaper, Radio, and Television still get the lions share of marketing budgets around the world, amongst all this so called change.
Business owners do what they believe works, not what you think works. They want proven success stories and tangible results, not theory or the idea of better results, it needs to be hard copy. The problem isn’t that marketing and advertising isn’t changing, the change is really being driven by the consumers themselves. It is changing, the challenge is…consumers still respond to old methods, mostly because they have been conditioned to respond to the industrial age ways.
Until the shift from the Industrial Age to the Digital Age is fully complete, we will have to compete in those two worlds, our messages will have to be in both environments, because they make money. After all, making money is what it’s all about in business right? If money is your motivator, you will practice old methods and new, and you will invest more in the one that brings you the highest yield.
There is a thought process that no one opens direct mail anymore, no one reads newspapers, and no one watches TV ads, and yet, they still rake in huge revenues. In time, probably not in my time, this will become true, and the digital formats will be where the majority of budgets are spent.
If business owners had any foresight, they would be building infrastructure and systems to leverage the digital age, they will be ahead of their time. They will be the early adopter, and they will be prepared to receive the benefits at a time where everyone is trying to innovate and implement. It’s really not about checking off you to do list, it’s changing the way you see and think about business. Only then will your marketing will change.
Until then, The Status Quo Continues, is that you, or are you seeing something different?

I have been going through an interesting phase in my life lately, one where you feel the pressure to conform to what others think you should do, or they disapprove of what you do. I’ll state upfront, I’m not a conformist, that also tells you things most of the time, don’t go the way I would have them. If conforming will make those haters, or the opposition happy, the question that begs to be asked in my head is, why? What is it their afraid of, or disapprove of? It’s usually motivated by some deep need to control the world around them. I’m generalizing of course, but my experience tells me the motive is typically control, which normally comes from a lack in their life somewhere, something not understood, which leads to the fear of loss on some level.
These people typically, are those closest to you, the ones you thought you could trust, the ones you thought would support you, the ones you thought you could count on if things got tough. I’ll state here for clarity, I WAS WRONG! It turns out, everything is about them, and has very little to do with you. You….are merely a stimulant that triggers the fear of loss, that fear of KAOS, that fear of losing control.
I’m not complaining, I’m hurting, but not complaining. The world around us is not interested in building character, or change, it’s only interested comfort, getting more stuff. Most are only interested in being comfortable, but I’m convinced that state doesn’t do anything to make the world a better place. In my opinion, it is no different than doing nothing, and the price of doing nothing is much higher than failure.
Stepping out, not complying, has it’s price. It’s entirely possible you will have to find a new community of friends to be with, people that are more like-minded with your view of the world, and in my case business. It sounds harsh doesn’t it. This is the time where you find out how committed you are to what you are doing, do you believe it is important that you must do what you do. Only you can answer the question, will you conform or follow your dream?
