Flying Cars in 2011!

A friend of mine in Seattle is very much a transportation expert, in fact, he predicted flying cars would be here sooner than we anticipated, but I was skeptical. Not any longer. I can remember as a young boy talking about how someday we would be like the Jetsons, but here on earth, not in space. Do you remember the cartoon based show, every Saturday morning we would watch the Jetsons and pretend it was me flying around in one of those fan-dangled vehicles. Glen Hiemstra from the site Futurist.com, made a statement not to long ago, here’s his quote, ” Looking ahead, over the next decade or two we will, nationally and internationally, need to be thinking systemically about travel demand and supply, advanced transportation technologies, and how to achieve sustainable transportation, if that is possible.” Advanced Technologies, could it be that Glen is talking about flying cars? Probably not.

The truth is, the 1st flying car is expected to be available in 2011, that’s right, a company called, Terrafugia Inc. has produced a vehicle that flies! Barring government interference and the FTC, we should see this car soon. Now I figured you wouldn’t believe me so I am going to let you see for yourself, I have for you a video of the car actually flying, and parked in a driveway. Wrap your brain around this, I can see all kinds of problems making this car available. Hell we can’t drive properly on roads now let alone be flying too! On June 3rd, 2009 this car took it’s first flight, here’s the video:

    Hi Owen,

An interesting look at the future. Personally I do not see this coming by 2011 for a number of reasons including government regulation. The government will not allow flying cars until they are sure they can be controlled and licensed. This will take time to get into place and we both know the government turns their wheels very slowly.

    Hey Rob,

Oh it’s coming, you will need a pilot’s license, apparently only 30 hours of flying time, about $250,000 to buy one, and you’ll have to go thru more red tape than you can imagine to be an owner of such a vehicle, but it’s happening. I doubt we’ll see any in Canada, but someone in the US of A will step up and be the 1st person to die in one : )

Another great post, Owen. I am with you. I don’t think the flying car will be a reality any time soon. I especially don’t think it will be a reality when a human has control of it. One would need a pilots licence for sure. What about weather, people jumping out of them etc. Hmmm too many variables when there are a lot of drivers who can handle driving on a surface let alone going up and down in the air.

Glad you liked it, everyday we get closer to this problem of people allowed to fly instead of drive, but hey, it’s not my problem.
