Helping the Technically Challenged

I have been a technology man for over twenty years and it still amazes me how many people are afraid of computers. Worse yet are unable to learn about them because of fear, no time and so on. Whatever the excuse is, it will work is what I say.

I love to help people with there computers, I love seeing the lights turn on when they figure out they really can’t break anything that can’t be fixed! When they learn something new and they can keep on using the computer they spent so much money on. The fear of loss is a very powerful thing and it’s this very fear that many take advantage of in the computer industry.

I don’t run around looking for computers to fix, but I do look for people who want to learn about that box that scares them half to death. Helping others to understand that everything will be ok no matter what they do is my greatest joy. Really, if you lost all your data, would life end right there on the spot? Probably not, in fact you would find another way to get things done or you would just get the problem solved. It’s all attitude isn’t it?

I recently had a complete crash of my hard drive, I laughed and re-installed, loaded my data from a DVD backup I made and I was back to normal in a couple days. Thinking ahead, backing up your critical data and having legit (legal) software disks to re-load applications is what you need to have to recover quickly.

Having said that, most people don’t backup their information, e-mail, contacts and so on. Why? I don’t know, it seems logical that everyone would do it but they don’t. It boils down to, do they know how? many won’t ask for fear of looking stupid, how dumb do you look when the crash hits. I’m just say’in!

Live life in such a way that others will call you again and again. How you ask? Well, ask yourself one question, how many people are better off because you lived?

There it is, being involved in your community, your church, your neighbourhood, volunteer groups will find you opportunities to do just that.

You might say it’s the same as having a servant heart, willing to give rather than receive, to help rather than not. The golden rule comes to mind here.

Knowing how to solve a problem is gold, you can help so many. I happen to be a technology man who likes to help the technically challenged. What are you and how do you help others? I would love to hear what you do.

Until next time.

The Last Lecture By Randy Pausch

I heard about Randy awhile back but never heard his story or his lecture until just a few days ago. We all go through life thinking we have a tomorrow and worry about all the wrong things while expecting there is a tomorrow. Randy wrote a book that was directed and for his children, the biggest head fake of all, it wasn’t for us.

We are blessed by Randy’s work and his wisdom each and everyday and I think we miss it without a seconds thought. I hope you will take the time to watch this clip called The Last Lecture, it will put things in perspective while we all hang out here on the Internet.

Watch out for the head fakes.

How To Be Remembered

If you’re like me, I often find myself wondering whats going to happen next, what does God have for me today kind of questions. As I stare out my office window I can’t help thinking about the next twenty years and what I would like them to look like when I’m 70 something.

Many of us going through life without spending 30 seconds on planning our life. I know back when I was 13 I wanted to be a Major League Baseball player, only to discover I didn’t have the skill and there was no baseball to speak of for anyone 13 or older in my small town. I never pursued the next thing, I just gave up. A huge mistake.

So here I sit, wondering how I want to live out the next decade or two before it all ends. The first thing you do is take inventory right? Inventory on what you ask. On you! I have read a million or two books on business, how to make millions and how to get hired only to discover those authors can’t live your life or do it for you. You are you and what they claim works worked for them. I’ll admit there are common denominators that can be applied to most of us but each person is wired and designed completely different and interprets information from a point of view no one else can have. Let’s get back to the inventory. What questions should you ask yourself in order to pursue the next thing.

1.) What are you good at?

2.) What could I be the best at?

3.) What makes you happy?

4.) What excites you?

5.) What makes you feel accomplished and good about yourself?

6.) What are you most proud of having accomplished in your life?

7.) What do you enjoy sharing and experiencing with other people?

Well you get the idea. This is just a start, you could add your own questions to help flush out the answer or answers. I have found this exercise difficult at different points in my life, particularly today as I crest past 50 years old.

The biggest question of all is: How many people are better off because you lived?

I’ll leave you now to ponder your answer.

Good luck and talk to you soon.
