Have you ever watched a movie that made you sit and ponder, made you go hmmmm…., maybe made you cry, that made you feel good about yourself, or maybe, it inspired you. Or maybe you met someone who made you think there has to be a better way. Every now and then, you hear something that makes you stop and wonder what you’re so afraid of, what stops you in your tracks. And yet, with only 20 seconds of courage, you could change your life, even your world. Just 20 seconds of courage to make a decision.
Most of us are real busy getting ready to get ready, we’re good at it, so we keep doing it. And then there’s other times when we just act, we don’t even think about it, we just do. Which of the two inspires you most, getting ready, or doing? In my younger days I just did things, I rarely thought about what might happen, good or bad. I never really thought about the cost, emotionally or financially, I just took risks. I have to admit, I rarely ever sat down and got ready, putting my ducks in a row. Today, I still don’t know if it would have changed anything, if I had spent time planning and getting ready. Most of the time, I just thought, all I need is 20 seconds of courage, and something great would happen, and it usually did.
Those risks were in my head, there was and probably never will be long drawn out plans, trying to get everything just right before acting. Personally, I don’t believe you learn as much from planning as you do from doing. But that’s my story, you’re not me. I do however, believe in you, and I know you can muster up 20 seconds of courage to make a decision to do something great. Ready? Go!
You don’t have to look far to find a book, a seminar or a website on how to be a leader, what a leader is, and what they even look like. The truth is, the list of characteristics of a leader in the future is actually quite short. As business becomes more and more human, so is the leader believe it or not.
I’m willing to bet that special person in your life, that person that influences you or gets your respect is not your boss. Most bosses have a problem with power and authority, they don’t know how to use it, they are truly bad at valuing people. They typically have a superiority complex, they are authorities on everything, it’s their way or the highway, there’s no compromise. I know you have a boss like that or you know someone like I just mentioned. There is good news though, business leaders are changing, if not today, they will be in the near future.
The leader of the future listens to whats going on, they realize it’s not about them, the also understand the Internet is not an echo chamber. They know the value of people, the conversation, they understand it’s first the fan (follower), then the customer, they know how to grow bigger ears. They have a good idea where the world is going, they understand brands have to be likeable and loveable in order to win in the digital marketplace. They also understand brands need to be human.
Making business human is the strong suit of the leader in the future, they know a brand is is a voice, a product is a souvenier, and that everyone brings value to the table, that the voice of the follower, the fan, and every person that visits their business is precious. The leader of the future knows that Social Media networks are the 1st listening platform to invest time in. That today online and offline are no longer different places, everything is being integrated to be social and mobile.
But the genuine authentic leader has 4 qualities:
1.) They Care on every level.
2.) They Believe in you – they want to be with dream makers, not dream killers.
3.) They are Fair, and they don’t play favorites.
4.) They expect Excellence at all time.

I have been thinking about this question for some time, because there appears to be a gap between IT Departments / Leaders and the rest of the organization. IT departments tend to think in icolation when it comes to the I.T. Plan. I’m generalizing but, this is normal because IT departments believe that the rest of the organization couldn’t possibly understand the complexities of technology let alone know how to implement it. That’s no longer the truth today, everyone has stepped up and learned more and do infact understand far better what technology means and what it can do. That’s not what I want to share with you right now, lets talk about who the I.T. Plan is for.
If the CIO or the person charged with the technology needs of the organization builds an I.T. Plan without consulting all departments and subject matter experts first, should be relieved of duty. The secret to a successful I.T. Strategic Plan is to ensure you have talked with all areas of the organization. It’s a MUST! If you don’t, you have no way of knowing what they struggle with, what they would like to be able to do, and what things they would like you to fix. The subject matter experts in the organization are your greatest allies, they can help you execute incredible customer service. The organization will know you care about each person, that makes buy in much easier when change takes place in systems they use.
Your responsibility is to deliver the right solutions, the right technology and above the best customer service to your organization. It has nothing to do with technology, it’s about people and always will be. The I.T. Strategic Plan is a road map for the IT Staff, it lays out the years work, and how you will serve the organization on a daily basis.
