Every once and a while, not often, we come across an incredible message, and you can’t get it out of your head. So I thought I would share this with you, with the hopes that you will go out into the world and do what you were meant to do. The worlds future needs you, and it depends on you to finish your story, do you know what it is yet?
Enjoy!
As taken from the book, Orbiting the Giant Hairball, by Gordon MacKenzie.
“Before you were born, God came to you and said:
Hi there! I just dropped by to wish you luck, and to assure you that you and I will be meeting again soon. Before you know it.
You’re heading out on an adventure that will be filled with fascinating experiences. You’ll start out as a tiny speck floating in an infinite dark ocean. Quite saturated with nutrients. So you wont have to go looking for food or a job or anything like that. All you’ll have to do is float in the darkness. And grow incredibly. And change miraculously.
You’ll sprout arms and legs. And hands and feet. And fingers and toes.
As if from nothing your head will take form. You nose, your mouth, your ears will emerge.
As you continue to grow bigger and bigger, you will become aware that this dark, oceanic environment of yours – which when you were tiny, seemed so vast is now actually cramped and confining. That will lead you to the unavoidable conclusion that you’re going to have to move to a bigger place.
After much groping about in the dark, you will find an exit. The mouth of a tunnel.
“Too small,” you’ll decide. “Couldn’t possibly squeeze through there.”
But there will be no other apparent way out. So with primal spunk, you will take on your first “impossible” challenge and enter the tunnel.
In doing so, you will be embarking on a brutal no-turning back, physically exhausting, claustrophobic passage that will introduce to pain and fear and hard physical labour. It will seem to take forever, but the mysterious undulations of the tunnel itself will help squirm you through and finally, after what will seem like interminable striving, you will break through to a blinding light.
Giant hands will pull you gently but firmly, into an enormous room. There will be several huge people, called adults, huddling around you, as if to greet you. If it is an old-fashioned place, one of these humungous people may hold you upside down by the legs and give you a swat on the backside to get you going.
All of this will be what the big people on the other side call being born. For you, it will be only the first of your new life’s many exploits.
God continues:
I was wondering, while you’re over there on the other side, would you do me a favour?
“Sure!” you chirp.
Would you take this artist’s canvas with you and paint a masterpiece for me? I’d really appreciate that.
Beaming, God hands you a pristine canvas. You roll it up, and tuck it under your arm and head off on your journey.
Your birth is just as God has predicted, and when you come out of the tunnel into the bright room, some doctor or nurse looks down at you in amazement and gasps:
“Look! The little kid’s carrying a rolled-up artist’s canvas!”
Knowing that you do no yet have the skills to do anything meaningful with your canvas, the big people take it away from you and give it to society for safekeeping until you have acquired the prescribed skills requisite to the canvas’s return. While society is holding this property of yours, it cannot resist the temptation to unroll the canvas and draw think blue pale lines and little blue numbers all over it’s virgin surface.
Eventually, the canvas is returned to you, it’s rightful owner. However, it now carries the implied message that if you will paint inside the blue lines and follow the instructions of the little blue numbers your life will be a masterpiece.
And that is a lie.
For more than 50 years I worked on my paint-by-numbers creation. With uneven but persistent diligence. I dipped an emaciated paint-by-numbers brush into colour No. 1and painstakingly painted inside each little blue-bordered area marked 1. The onto 2 and 3 and 4 and so on. Sometimes, during restive periods of my life, I would paint, say, the 12 spaces before the 10 spaces (a token rebellion against overdoses of linearity). More than once, I painted beyond a line and, feeling embarrassed, would either try to wipe off the errant colour or cover it over with another before anyone might notice my lack of perfection. From time to time, although not often, someone would compliment me, unconvincingly, on the progress of my “masterpiece.” I would gaze at the richness of others’ canvases. Doubt about my own talent for painting gnawed at me. Still, I continued to fill in the little numbered spaces, unaware of, or afraid to look at, any real alternative.
Then there came a time, after half a century of daubing more or less inside the lines, that my days were visited by traumatic events. The dividends of my noxious past came home to roost, and the myth of my life began horrifically to come unglued. I pulled back from my masterpiece-in-the-works and saw it with emerging clarity.
It looked awful.
The stifled strokes of paint had nothing to do with me. They did not illustrate who I am or speak of whom I could become. I felt duped, cheated, ashamed – anguished that I had wasted so much canvas, so much paint. I was angry that I had been conned into doing so.
But that is the past. Passed.
Today I wield a wider brush – pure ox-bristle. And I’m swooping it through the sensuous goo of Cadmium Yellow, Alizarin Crimson or Ultramarine Blue (not Nos. 8, 13 or 4) to create the biggest, brightest, funniest, fiercest dragon that I can. Because that has more to do with what’s inside of me than some prescribed plagiarism of somebody else’s tour de force.
You have a masterpiece inside you, too, you know. One unlike any that has ever been created or ever will be.
And remember:
If you go to your grave
without painting
your masterpiece,
it will not
get painted.
No one else
can paint it.Only you.
The Equation Of Excellence
Ranked as the “greatest business book of all time” in a 2002 poll by Britain’s Bloomsbury Publishing, this best-selling business book has long been a must-have for the boardroom, business school, and bedside table. In Search of Excellence: Lessons from America’s Best-Run Companies (with Robert H. Waterman, Jr.), 1982
The book was primarily about three things, Listen to your customers. Take care of your people, and don’t let your values slip or slacken.
Tom Peters has searched the world over for businesses in Search of Excellence, he latest book The Little BIG Things: 163 Ways to Pursue EXCELLENCE, 2010 continues the family of books on Excellence.
So why do I mention these books? Just this past week I had a brief online conversation after I posted a question on Twitter & FaceBook. It was a simple question meant to make you think about what Excellence looks like to you, and how do we measure it. So I’ll pose the question to you:
Is your Pursuit Quantity or Quality? – Or should it be Excellence?
Now the question seemed confusing but, two interesting comments / statements came back to me. One was a question that confirmed the confusion, having said that, it was an interesting thought.
How does pursuing quality differ from pursuing excellence?
My response even surprised me, and it got me to thinking:
Quality & Excellence are not the same thing. Quality is part of an equation that determines Excellence.
Another friend of mine kept it simple, but was it really?
My pursuit is to simply do my best at all times.
I possed another question.
There is the problem, how is your best measured, how do you know it’s your best?
The conversation continued for some time and again kept it simple:
Well, it’s measured in that moment of ‘doing’. I consciously know if I’m doing my best at any given time. Sometimes, we’re tired, and sometimes we’re completely energized – our best varies on where we are. I think we all know when we’re doing our best – like an internal barometer.
Still not happy with the answer, I drilled deeper not letting my friend off the hook:
Based on that statement, you only seem to know when you’re doing best by how you feel. Emotions are not always the best way to measure where one is at.
You must have some indicators that you monitor that keep you on track, that keep you focused, that ensure some sense of quality. Pursuing Excellence is a complicated set of habits that equal Excellence, but only you can set the standard of those habits, you are setting the bar for you business. If you don’t, someone else will judge you or your business on bad information / Excellence.
Two things struck me, there probably should be more than two, but….one, everyone seems to have a different view on how Excellence is measured. And two, I have come to the conclusion that there is this equation that takes you to a value called Excellence. This equation is something each business owner must look long and hard at, it doesn’t even have to be a business, anything in life that you measure and wish to have some level of Excellence. You or the business owner, has to set the bar, and those who experience you, your brand, and or your business will decide if it was Excellence. So there is alot to consider in the equation.
Is or has how we value Excellence changed because of technology, systems and more efficient ways of obtaining the almighty level of Excellence? Is Excellence easier to obtain because of technology, or ways of automating simple tasks?
Will the future of Excellence morph, will the definition of the word be changed because of how we measure Excellence? In my small understanding, Excellence would be a series of habits or action items done exceptionally well, how many habits makeup this equation, or do we go by how we feel? (not recommended)
The question is yours now, what does the equation of Excellence look like in your opinion?
My Stay In Winnipeg, Manitoba
I just returned from 12 days on the road with my Mother, yes, my Mother. I love my Mother, she’s 71 and is the most fun to be with on a road trip, we travelled from British Columbia to Manitoba. The drive was a marathon, 26 hours, which we did in two days coming back to my home in British Columbia. I learned things about my Mother no child should ever want to know, but I won’t share that with you here. I’ll be sharing about this trip in a series of blog posts, I hope they make you think.
On my journey, I learned a great deal about people and what I do, I was shocked to find out how we as a people in a country of this size don’t really care or want to participate in building a future. We want the future, we know there is a future, and we hope it makes our lives easier, but will we be able to do less and get more.
The hotel (Canad Inn) I was living in for the past week in Winnipeg was a nice location and a big facility, nice big rooms (FREE WI-FI), huge Flat Screen HDTVs, Restaurant, Room Service, a Hot Tub & Swimming, Meeting Rooms, Banquet Facilities, it had it all, even a Mini – Casino that was open from 9AM – 2AM! You didn’t have to leave the place, even grocery shopping was next door. In the restaurant, you only had to sit a short while and you could tell who the regulars were, everyone knew them by name it seemed. A small network of people in this hotel world we were all living in, no one, and I mean no one talked about the future or technology or anything of real interest to me. They were all talking about they’re lives, what they were going through, who they were working for and who they were hanging out with these days. I suddenly felt all alone, what I was there for was not needed, nor did anyone care what I was doing in Winnipeg. Even my waitress wasn’t excited to see me, she was going to give birth soon so you can tell what she was talking about with me. But for the most part, they just wanted to get to the Casino….why? Money of course, so they could escape the world they are in.
My epiphany, there are so many who are merely doing or living a work-style instead of a life-style, they talked about they’re life, but felt like they couldn’t participate in it, it was something happening to them, they were all working so hard, working for weekends & holidays. The future was something that was going to happen to them, and they hope things get easier, easier to slow the world down and easier to control the life they have. That’s a broken way of living to me, if you are working for weekends & holidays, your shit is broken….so why don’t we stop and do something about it?
I would be having coffee or breakfast and someone would always, as if on Que, where are you from and what brings you to Winnipeg? I would share two things, I’m from British Columbia and I drove my Mother here. Then…the big question, what do you do for a living….I always respond sarcastically with, ” as little as possible “. They keep pressing and I try to explain how I try to help businesses and individuals adopt the future of technology and build business models to increase revenues. A blank stare and a, ” oh that sounds like fun “. No, it’s hard work, but it’s work I fit into my life, it does not define or consume my life.
Working to live is a hopeless way to carry on, but that’s changing, I see future generations wanting the lifestyle without the work, that sounds wrong too! Rewards and work go hand in hand don’t they? Can you have the rewards and not have to work for them? Maybe that’s why we buy lottery tickets, go to Casino’s and Bingo Halls, we want to get that big pile of cash so we can life a different life than we are living now. In fact, we bank our future’s on winning that money rather than participating in building the future each one of us wants.
I beg of you Winnipeg, and all of Canada, lift your head up, look forward, look to the future, observe what is happening around you, and start building the future you want to live in. Let’s help one another find a better way to go from a Work-style to a Life-style.
Is it me or am I all alone here?
The Future Of Your Business Depends On A Story Shared
I can remember as a young boy, sitting in front of the radio and listening to The Shadow late at night. The story being told in these who done it’s was captivating, and yet frightening at the same time. I mean come on, murder to a young boy in the 1960’s was unheard of in most small towns in Northern British Columbia. It was like pretend death, not real right? There were other programs but The Shadow always had you shivering, hiding under the covers, and making sure the light was on. Just in case you had to run, you had to see where you were going.
Radio was and is still a powerful medium, I know, I spent 15 years doing it. The problem with Radio today though, they almost never tell a story, they just sell, sell, sell. In my previous post I talk about sharing, and it proves my point, sharing the story is much more captivating than trying to sell 100% of the time. Even listening to a Hockey Game live on the radio told a story, the story of the progress each team was making, the ebb & flow, the swing in momentum, the incredible save Cheevers made but you couldn’t see, the announcers had to be masters of telling that story to keep you listening. The same is true with your presence on your Blog or website, personal or business, the story will draw people in, it’s been proven time and again for hundreds if not thousands of years.
The story is the glue, it is the very thing that can act as a magnet to your product, service or information. Find your story and share it, but remember, the story must be true and authentic, not fiction. It’s the REAL part that makes people come back. Making your story real and authentic, makes you and your Blog useful, especially if it solves a problem or informs them. People always comeback to places they find useful, it’s human nature to stick with what and who they trust. So, is your story trust worthy, is it compelling, better yet, is it interesting?
Every business has a story to tell, I would love to hear the story of your business, and does it fit the future business model, the open & free business model. The future of your business depends on your story being shared. Because, when we want innovation, we must focus on open and free thinking, and the storytelling that accompanies it.
Traditional Business Is Still In Denial
Here it is, September 1st, 2010 and two things jumped out at me this morning after reading some business news. Newspapers still think they have something solid going, and Mall’s are still being touted as a good investment. With all the evidence that traditional business is failing in most sectors, those incredibly smart people are making critical errors in judgement.
Yesterday, a company called POSTMEDIA/Network announced that they have a new logo. Now it’s not the logo that has me scratching my head this morning. Former President of Roger’s Paul Godfrey is the President & CEO of Postmedia Network, this group’s list of brands should make you wonder why they continue down the futile path of print. Considering that Newspapers are dropping like flies these days, the predicting doom of book stores and other outbound media, why would you or anyone else invest in this venture? Not one but 11 brands under the Postmedia Network umbrella, all newspapers! They handle the National Post, Times Colonists, The Vancouver Sun, The Province, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Leader-Post, The StarPheonix, Ottawa Citizen, The Windsor Star and The Gazzette. These are probably the most read newspapers in Canada, and are also failing.
You can find Canadian Newspapers listed in iPad, you can’t read them, the list is of their websites you have to go visit, this will have to change if they want to survive. Newspapers should scrambling to make as many mobile apps as possible, build other ways of generating revenue. The online ad market is staggeringly huge, but for some reason print & TV are merely poking a stick at it. They will all but be forgotten when the other 3 billion people come online in the next 2 -3 years.
Another confusing move this morning, I was actually surprised how I responded when I read that a Mall in Surrey, B.C., Canada was sold for $91 Million, that’s cheap by today’s standards but it still sold. But a mall? Granted this mall is anchored by some heavy weights, SAVE-ON FOODS, Canadian Tire, Staples, Winners, HomeSense, Cactus Club and HSBC, plus 26 other businesses. Back in the 70’s & 80’s, he who owned the channel of distribution, had a secure future, would never be in danger of being out of business. Now, we still need some box stores, we will need warehouses, forklift drivers and so on. But you can also see where most of these mall businesses will either be 100% online or gone.
So the questions begs to be asked, why would you buy a mall? The investment of the land? Maybe. The longevity of these businesses remaining long time anchors in a mall? Maybe, but I doubt it.
These moves in of themselves are not life threatening or even bad for that matter by today’s standards, but in the next 3 – 5 years, I suspect they will be asking themselves what they were thinking.
Consider these two small movements today, and I quote, profits in Canada’s non-residential construction sector will fall to a five-year low this year, that’s according to a report by the Conference Board of Canada. Pre-tax profits for this year in this sector will be 1.2 billion, down from $1.4 billion in 2009, and will not recover to pre-recession levels until 2014, at it’s earliest, it’s survey forecast. If at all I wonder.
In Washington there is more bank demise, the number of problem-ridden US banks rose to the hihest levels in 17 years, just in the second quarter! The number of institutions on its “problem list” rose more than 7 percent in the second quarter.
Traditional business is still in denial, they keep doing business as usual thinking everything will turn out alright. Really? Do you really think things aren’t changing, do you really believe that a global population who screams to be heard, to be served the way they want to be served, they want it to be almost free or extremely low cost, they want it in an Open & Free Business Model. Today’s public will look until they find it the way they want it, no longer can you force people to do it your way big business, you best pay attention, because if you won’t, someone will pay attention and take your business. Wake Up!
On a positive note, today the Bank of Canada interest rate hike has been delayed : )
