How many times have we this, actions speak louder than words…it’s just another way of saying, it’s not what you say, it’s how you respond. Everything we do and say comes from some form of stimulus, we saw something, we heard something, and then we responded. I’ve said this before, and I teach it often, we are the ONLY creatures on earth that have the ability to STOP, THINK, THEN….decide how to respond. We can actually stop in the heat of the moment, every other creature on the planet can’t stop, they merely react.
Often, in our day…we have things happen that completely frustrate us, most of us react in a way that tells everyone around, you’re not happy with what just happened or was said. I run other businesses, and sometimes things happen that are truly out of your control, you can’t fix it, you don’t control the situation, you have to rely on other people not under your tent.
One of my businesses is a webhosting business, sometimes things break, and have nothing to do with me and my team, things don’t happen the way they should, and take far too long to get resolved. In the meantime, customers can’t do certain things, can’t manage their website’s, or add email accounts.
With so many webhosting companies getting attacked, I’m actually surprised their aren’t bigger problems. Everyday there attempts to break into servers, billing systems, and WordPress sites. The amount of work that goes into protecting yourself is staggering at times. Companies like GoDaddy & Hostgator go down regularly, sometimes unnoticed, other times they can’t hide….third-party software companies go through the same things. Most companies it’s licenses, they keep those licenses alive remotely (not locally), so when that third party company goes down, so does all their customers, we can’t run the software to play or run our businesses. When that happens, it’s out of my hands, out of my control, there is nothing I can do but wait! Then frustration sets in.
So, how do you respond when you find yourself in this out of control situation?
The point is, we can’t possibly control everything, and we can’t stay in a perpetual state of frustration and anger, it’s just not healthy, we have to learn how to wait, learn how to trust other people doing everything they can to resolve the problem(s). So when things go sideways, try to keep things in perspective, error on the side of grace, and let those who can actually solve the problem, do their job, waiting is sometimes part of the job, part of being in business.
Like I said, it’s not what you say, it’s how you respond. Sometimes what you say, is not how you should respond, stop, think about how you should respond in a calm rational way, then respond. It’s too easy to get mad. Someone once said, the first one to get mad loses.
I have tried to live a my life with consistency, I don’t tend to get mad, but sometimes my direct style of communication gets me in trouble. I’ve always told the truth, I don’t know how to lie, I was good at as a kid, but as an adult, a business person, it’s not a good practice. I would rather have influence over someone than authority, the later is not an effective way to manage people or run a business.
I hope this gives you some perspective, something to think about, something you can practice and put into action. People are watching, people are listening, and they are always assessing what kind of person / leader you are, don’t let what you say undo all the good you’ve done. I spent many years just winging it, just responding to what felt right and mostly what felt good, sound familiar? I have found that there are more business owners, check that, most people were doing the same thing. As I mentioned in my previous post, we spend more time planning a two week vacation than we do our careers and our lives. Why is that? I suspect due to a lack of knowledge, a poor understanding of what’s at stake here….it’s your life and you only get one chance to do it. Enough about that, I want to share with you what drives me and what my vision for Owen Greaves Consulting is for 2010.
I have met and worked for many, many business owners, CIO’s, COO’s, and they all struggle with the same things for the most part. They know what they want to do, but don’t really know how to build and implement a strong I.T. Plan. I.T. visionaries are way ahead of the rest of the organization, think of a funnel, you have a narrowing in the middle, a wide open area at one end and small opening at the other end. The visionary is out in the wide open section and instructs back to the small opening at the other end to do this or that. A short period of time goes by and he / she is frustrated because what they saw and instructed is not done. Why?
The workers back at the small opening can’t see the big picture through the narrow opening in the middle, they don’t see what the visionary see’s way out there, they can’t even see where he is. The problem is at the narrow opening in the middle right? There has to be someone there that can clearly articulate what the visionary wants done back to the people (workers) in the small opening at the back. You might say things get lost in translation, it can happen if the person in the middle does not clearly understand what the visionary wants!
So what does this have to do with my vision for 2010. It’s obvious to me that there is a bigger problem than the funnel, it’s the man in the middle. Having someone who can build the plan so the workers can get done what the visionary wants completed. My vision, to help that person or organizations with a simple way to build that Strategic Technology Plan and to ensure that all businesses indeed do have a plan. Most don’t, they rely on internal staff, staff that don’t know how to build a plan because they are frankly too close to the problem(s). Most business owners think they know how, but they all too often are using the wrong filters to truly understand what the I.T. Plan should look like and be. Some of the smartest business people in the world don’t fully understand what needs to be in the I.T. Strategic Plan, hence they should hire the right people and or consultants to help build that strategy. No matter how big or small your business is, you should have a good plan on how technology will drive your business.
Most organizations have not documented what thier business processes are! How could they possibly know which software application, payroll, HR, CRM software and what have you to implement if they don’t know each and every process it takes to get the job done in a day. My goal is to ensure as many businesses / owners as possible have a good I.T. Plan. This has very little to do with Social Media but it has much to do with Technology overall. Social Media happens to be a large part of my work at the moment and it’s the hot topic of discussion everywhere I go.
My Plans for 2010:
- Increase Public Speaking Engagements – on The New Technology, I.T. Strategies / Planning
- To educate and teach 100 businesses develop an I.T. Strategic Plan. (roughly 8 new businesses per month)
- Develop a video series on developing I.T. Strategic Plans. ( The I.T. Strategic Planning Series)
- Continue working on my next eBook, The New Technology Pt 2. (hope to complete by end of 2010)
- Write more often on my Blog. (daily if possible)
- Get more subscribers on my Blog.
- And of course, increase revenues ( I have to put that on here)
If you don’t have a list of items or targets, stop right now and make one…make two! What are you aiming for in 2010 and how do you plan to hit your targets? Better yet, what’s your I.T. Strategy for 2010?
I can see a problem with my list already, if I want to be successful, I have to find a few things to not consider doing. I may have to hire or partner up if I want to achieve all my goals.
What’s On Your List?
There are two questions that come up in almost every conversation I have on the topic of Social Media here in my local community, not online but offline. It never fails, these are the most asked questions I face.
1.) How Do I make or Implement Social Media in my Business?
2.) How do I make money and get the appropriate ROI using Social Media?
That’s more than two questions and alot to unpack, but that’s how they end up coming to me.
Keep in mind, I live in Canada and we typically are not early adopters on most things, we are at least 6 – 18 months behind our neighboring domestic USA. But that’s another story. We tend to be behind on what these new technology tools and movements are, what they mean and how to integrate them into our businesses and lives. So when the questions come from the executives the department leaders don’t have the right answer and worse yet they try to figure it out on their own, using old metrics and methods to generate some kind of understanding.
These two questions are hard to answer over a coffee or even in a board room, bringing in someone who has an understanding and is actually involved or an early adopter having success with Social Media to walk through some very important questions. Success doesn’t have to mean they are making millions, it means they have done many things right putting them in a position to monetize their passion or existing business.
There is many a debate on where Social Media fits in an organization, the Marketing / PR Department, HR, IT Department and so on. I would suggest to you it fits into all three. The Marketing / PR Department will most likely be the message creator for consistency purposes and also would hand off the Social Media chores to the Online Community Communications person. The HR Department would be involved for NDA purposes and orientation of new and existing staff, this would include the Internet Policy that the I.T. Department most likely helped develop. I.T. supports and ensures up time for all aspects of Information Technology needs.
I am assuming here that Information Technology was implemented properly in the organization, which means, I.T. is in line with business needs and processes for the purpose of obtaining the goals of the organizations business plan. As you can see there is much that needs to be discussed before you venture out into this environment without building a team to discuss how you will proceed. The key is to bring someone in your area that is in the know and can help your team by ensuring the right questions are being asked and that they are getting answered. This person is much like a Project Manager with a difference, he/she is a lighthouse, a beacon and a sounding board. In the end it is up to the organization to decide what and how they want to proceed.
The point of this article is not lay out what you have to do step by step, but to prompt you to bring in someone who is knowledgeable, who is respected and recognized as someone in Social Media circles that can truly assist your organization. Someone with a strong background in technology and online marketing. This person can help you build the appropriate team, that will go a long way to ensuring success in developing your Social Media Strategy.
