The story of a 9 year old boy collecting food for the Kamloops Food Bank because someone burned the storage facility to the ground, is a Noble work, admirable even, but why hasn’t the city and or the community stepped up? Why should a 9 year old have to show the rest of the town what should be done by us grown ups?
If we all believe we are supposed help your neighbor, feed & clothe the poor, what are we waiting for, a 9 year old to step up? As you can sense by my language I’m a little annoyed that no one else has come forward to help the Kamloops Food Bank.
So with that in mind, I’m going to invite you to support your local food bank. On August 31st, I am holding a TweetUp at the Roasted Grape in Abbotsford from 4PM – 7PM. This will be a fund raiser in the form of food, so bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the Abbotsford Food Bank. So if you’re local to Abbotsford (less than 2 hours away) stop in and meet great people, and help those in need.
I hope you will step up and support those in need by supporting your local food bank, next time you are shopping for food, buy something extra and take it to your local food bank. It’s, a small thing, but you will make the world a better place for someone struggling to find a meal.
MARK IT IN YOUR CALENDAR:!
On August 31st, the TweetUp is at the Roasted Grape in Abbotsford from 4PM – 7PM. The Roasted Grape is located on the corner of Montrose & Fraser Way in the OLD Bank Of Montreal building in Abbotsford.
It’s that time of year where I want to give credit to those who are due, if you haven’t looked at the Top 5 to watch in 2010, take look and be sure to keep an eye on them. In this list I want to recognize some people that are right here in my community, they are special people and are a complete joy to be with. You would be blessed by them should you decide to follow them, please take the time to get to know them.
I have had the privledge of meeting these fine folks at TweetUp’s or private meetings held over 2009, so here we go:
People in my area that I haven’t met, but would love too!
There are more, Twitter and well, Social Media is not as popular up here in my Community but I’m working on that everyday. The most popular or most recognized person in Social Media circles in Vancouver is Rebecca Bollwitt (miss604), she is #4 on my Top 5 to watch in 2010.
I want to share these cool, no…great people with you, I hope you get to know them and maybe even meet them one day.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
Every month I try to pull together local’s to a TweetUp, bring entrepreneurs together, network and share their stories, it’s something I love to do. Bringing people together, sometimes we get to help each other, teach other and build one another up. You never know what’s going to happen and who is going to show up, but that’s the best part for me.
Today I met some new cool people, Alan & Keldie Jameison, a young lady named Raj Thandhi and Curtis McHale. The regulars were there which is always a blessing because they love these get togethers as much as I do. Today we met at a local place called Gourmet Gallery in the Immel Plaza Abbotsford. Great little place with free WiFi too : )
I took a few of pictures to share with you, enjoy:
Today was a great day, if you haven’t attended a local TweetUp in your area you really are losing out. We met at The Bat Cave (known as Beans & Leaves on Ventura in Abbotsford) where they serve great coffee and pastries. The opportunity to meet people face-to-face that you chat with online makes the experience even that more special. If you are unemployed or self-employed you really need to get to these TweetUps for the networking alone, you just never know who you will meet and what may come from that meeting. Heck your next job might be hidden at a TweetUp.
I had the privilege of hanging with Chris Penner & Ronda Payne, it’s always a blast when they show up…never a dull moment. But today I met new people, Rick & Kathleen Rake, very cool people and they have so much to offer so you should follow them on Twitter and get to know them.
Here are the Twitter handles:
1.) Chris Penner – @chrispenner
2.) Ronda Payne – @rondapayne
3.) Rick Rake – @rickrake
4.) Kathleen Rake – @kathleenrake
Tell them Owen sent you.
Chris Penner is a local Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams here in my community.
Ronda Payne is a writer here, you can hire her anytime she is awesome.
Rick Rake is the former Editor of the Abbotsford News and is now retired.
I attended a Blogger event here in my community at a pub / restaurant / night club called The Duke of Dublin, we tried to talk but the live entertainment meant we had to yell. It’s a nice facility but probably not the best place to sit and talk quietly, get to know each other and cover items like blogging. Having said that, it was still great fun to catch up with a few people I already new and of course its always fun to meet new faces to match the names on Twitter.
The two primary question’s were, do you have a Blog and do you monetize your blog? Interestingly enough everyone had a blog but not all have monetized their blog because that wasn’t the reason why they started the blog in the first place. My primary goal is to help businesses with I.T. Strategy and how to use Social Media and Social Media Networks in their businesses. I’ll admit I didn’t start out with the intent of monetizing but over time I have put up some low level ways of monetizing my blog.
Once there was a break in the music we were able to share some stories and swap business cards. If you haven’t attended a Tweet-up or a Blogging Event you should, you meet the coolest people. These aren’t the most flattering pictures but I’m posting them anyway, enjoy!
